Anatomy And Physiology Intro

TermDefinition
Anatomy The study of the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another.
Physiology The science of how body parts function and work together.
Homeostasis The ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions.
Tissue A group of cells with a similar structure and function that work together to perform a specific task.
Organ A structure made up of different tissues that work together to perform a specific function.
Cell The basic unit of life that makes up all living things.
Integumentary System The system that covers the body's surface and includes the skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands.
Skeletal System The framework of the body that provides support, structure, protection, and allows for movement.
Muscular System The system that allows the body to move, maintain posture, and produce heat.
Nervous System The control center of the body that gathers information from the environment and sends messages to the muscles, organs, and glands.
Endocrine System The system that produces hormones that regulate many body functions, such as growth, development, metabolism, and reproduction.
Cardiovascular System The system that transports blood throughout the body, carrying oxygen, nutrients, and waste products.
Respiratory System The system that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
Digestive System The system that breaks down food into its nutrients, absorbs those nutrients into the bloodstream, and eliminates waste products.
Urinary System The system that removes waste products from the blood in the form of urine.
Reproductive System The system that allows humans to reproduce.
Anterior (ventral) Front of the body.
Posterior (dorsal) Back of the body.
Medial Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral Away from the midline of the body.
Superior (cephalic) Above or towards the head.
