Dyspepsia Difficult or poor digestion
Dysphagia Difficult eating or swallowing
Dysentery Inflammation of the small and large intestine caused by a bacterial infection
Diarrhea Loose or watery stools
Constipation Stool that is difficult to pass
IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) A dysfunctional disorder of the colon
Crohn's Disease Chronic inflammation of the ileum and colon
Ulcerative Colitis Inflammatory bowel disorder with ulcers in the colon
Diverticulosis Small pouches in the lining of the large intestine
Diverticulitis Inflammation of the diverticula
Cholelithiasis Presence of gallstones
Pancreatitis Inflammation of the pancreas
Ileus Intestine fails to move food and waste
Volvulus Intestine twists around itself, causing obstruction
Intussusception Obstruction where the intestine telescopes within itself
Inguinal Hernia Intestine protrudes through a weakened area in the abdominal wall in the pelvic region of a male
Umbilical Hernia Intestine pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall in the umbilicus area
Hiatal Hernia Stomach pushes up through the diaphragm and into the esophagus
Anorexia Lack of appetite
Anorexia Nervosa Eating disorder characterized by self-starvation
Bulimia Nervosa Eating disorder characterized by binge eating and purging
Type 1 Diabetes Pancreas produces little or no insulin
Type 2 Diabetes Pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body becomes resistant to it
Ketoacidosis Serious condition when blood glucose levels are elevated for a period of time
Gestational Diabetes Temporary form of diabetes caused by hormones during pregnancy
Polydipsia Excessive thirst
Polyuria Excessive urination
Anastomosis Anastomosis
Colostomy Creating a new opening in the colon
Ileostomy Creating a new opening from the ileum to the outside of the body
Colonoscopy Examining the entire colon
Sigmoidoscopy Examining the sigmoid colon
Laparoscopy Examination through the abdominal wall
Lavage Washing out a body cavity or organ with a saline solution
Gavage Tube feeding
