Genetic vocab

TermDefinition
Heredity The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another.
Alleles One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Dominant Allele an allele that expresses a phenotypical character over another allele
Recessive Allele A type of allele that when present on its own will not affect the individual
Genotype The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Phenotype The observable characteristics of an individual organism.
Homozygous(Purebred) Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Heterozygous(Hydrid) Having two different versions of the same gene
Gametes Reproductive cells, also known as sex cells, in animals and plants.
Homologous Having the same relative position, value, or structure.
Karyotype The number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species.
