Consanant Categories

| Stop | complete blockage of airstream with small burst of sound upon separation of articulators (also known as plosive) |
| Fricative | Airflow gently squeezed out through small area and friction generated |
| Sibilant | like an s |
| Affricate | the beginning of a stop with the end of a fricative eg chair, german |
| What are approximants? | Consanants where minimal obstruction to airflow occurs |
| Lateral approximant | air is forced around one or both sides of the tongue eg l in railing |
| Rhotic approximant | alveolar r sound |
| Bilabial approximant | back of tongue moves towards the soft palate and the lips round eg w in wet, double articulation |
| Palatal approximant | /j/ in yes - front of tongue moves towards hard palate |
| Nasal | airflow closed off at some point in the mouth and allowed to pass through nose eg /m/ in my and /n/ in nice |
| Tap | airflow interuppted by a single tap of the tongue across it e.g dd in ladder |
