Healing - Fractures
healing process
| Osteogenic | bone stem cells |
| Osteoblasts | bone-making cells |
| Osteoclasts | bone destroying (cutting) cells |
| Osteocytes | mature bone cells |
| What happens during week 1? | A hematoma (blood clot) forms to stop bleeding |
| What happens during weeks 2-3? | A soft callus (fibrocartilage) forms to bridge the broken pieces together and new blood vessels grow back into broken end |
| What happens during weeks 4-16? | Osteoblasts form a hard callus (bone) forms to repair break |
| Why are the weeks 4-16 dangerous? | Dangerous because if you break your bone again it won’t break “where it is supposed to” and could cause more damage to the body. |
| What happens during weeks 17-52? | Osteoclasts break down hard callus to bring the bone back to its original shape |
