Anatomy of the heart

The Heart

TermDefinition
Right ventricle Chamber where blood goes after right atrium
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve Valve that prevents backflow to the right ventricle
Tricuspid valve Valve that prevents blood backflow to the right atrium
Coronary sinus Drains deoxygenated blood from myocardium
Bicuspid valve Prevents blood backflow to the left atrium
Aortic semilunar valve Prevents blood backflow to the left ventrcle
Pulmonary trunk Vessel that carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Pericardium Outermost membrane surrounding the heart
Division of serous pericardium Parietal and Visceral
Pericarditis Swelling of serous layers causing friction and making heart work harder
Cardiac Temponade/ Pericardial Effusion Buildup of fluid in the heart
Atria Chamber where blood enters the heart
Ventricles Chambers where blood exit the heart
Interatrial septum Thin wall of tissue separating the two atria
Auricle The atria's attachment that increases surface area
Aorta Largest artery in the body
Pulmonary circulation Type of circulation that flows from right ventricle to left atrium
Systemic circulation Type of circulation which distributes blood to the entire body
Valvular incompetency When valves are unable to close efficiently
Valvular stenosis When valves are unable to open efficiently
Circumflex Feeds left atrium and left ventricle
Left anterior interventricular artery (LAD) Feeds anterior of left ventricle and right ventricle
Intercalated disks Structures that connect adjacent muscle cells
Aortic Arch Segment of the aorta that help distribute blood to the headand upper extremeties via the brachiocephalic trunk , the left common carotid, and the left subclavian artery.
Vena Cava Largest vein in the body
Superior vena cava Valveless vein that transports deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body
Inferior vena cava Largest vein that transports deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body
SA node Primary impulse initiator in the heart
AV node Name of node which is responsible for conducting impulses in the heart after the SA node
Purkinje fibers Name of the fibers that transmit electrical impulses to the ventricles after the bundle branches
Bachman's bundle Name of the bundle which transmits electrical impulses to the left atrium
