EKG Waves

What do the bumps and squiggles mean?

QuestionAnswer
What is another name for the baseline in an EKG? isoelectric line
What happens at the isoelectric line? nothing; no electrical activity
What happens during the P wave? atrial depolarization (firing)
How long is the P wave? 0.10 seconds
What does the PR interval represent? The time required for the impulse to travel from the atria through the AV node and to the Purkinje network.
Where does the PR interval start and stop? It starts at the beginning P wave and ends at the beginning of the QRS complex.
How long should the PR interval last? 0.12-0.20 sec
What can the PR segment be used for? diagnosing conditions. EX: depressed PR segment usually indicates pericarditis
Why is the QRS called a complex instead of a wave? It is composed of three different waves; Q, R, and S
How would describe the look of a QRS complex? narrow, steep angles, and sharp points
What does the QRS complex represent? ventricular depolarization and atrial repolarization
How do you recognized the Q wave? It is the first negative deflection (below the isoelectric line) after the P wave.
How do you recognize the R wave? It is the first positive deflection (above the isoelectric line) after the P wave.
How do you recognize the S wave? It is the second negative deflection (below the isoelectric line) after a Q or R wave.
How long should the QRS complex be? less than or equal to 0.12 seconds
Where is the J point? where the QRS complex ends and the ST segment begins
What is considered normal variance for the J point? 1 mm up or down
What might be the problem is the J point is beyond its 1 mm variance? This would indicate cardiac ischemia
Where is the ST segment found? from the end of the QRS complex to the beginning of the T wave
What does the ST segment represent? time between ventricular depolarization and ventricular repolarization
The ST segment is ___________ dependent. heart rate
The ST segment should be at the isoelectric line. (TRUE / FALSE) TRUE; being elevated or depressed indicates ischemia or infarction (both are bad)
The T wave should be symmetrical. (TRUE / FALSE) FALSE; it should be asymmetrical
How long should the QT interval be? 0.36-0.44 seconds
