Plant an animal cell

Made for 7th and up

TermDefinition
Cytoplasm fluid that fills cells- gel like materiel- they are suspended in fluid- Molecules such as enzymes, fatty acids, sugars, and amino acids are dissolved in the cytoplasm- found in both plant and animal cells
Cell membrane Outer boundary of the cell- the outer boundary of the cell that only allows for certain materials to go into and out of the cell- also called the plasma membrane - found in both plant and animal cells
Nucleus Brain of the cell- contains most of the cell's genetic material- the nucleus also coordinates everything- the nuclear envelope surrounds the nucleus- found in both plant and animal cells
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum a part of (or a region in the) endoplasmic reticulum that is tubular and lacks ribosomes- found in both plant and animal cells
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum where Proteins bind to the reticulum The RER is associated with many roles in protein synthesis, which also include post-translational modifications, folding, and sorting.- found in both plant and animal cells
Mitochondrion The powerhouse of the cell- cellular respiration takes place here- Mitochondria are very important to make energy for the cell- found in both plant and animal cells
Vacuole Storage areas of the cell- storage sacs store water and waste- there can be several small vacuoles in animal cells and several large vacuoles in plant cells- found in both plant and animal cells
Ribosomes protein factories- composed of RNA and protein- they are the site of protein synthesis- found in both plant and animal cells
Golgi Apparatus Shipping and recieving center- process proteins and other molecules and move some of them out of the cell- works closely with the ER mainly the RER- found in both plant and animal cells
Lysosomes Digestion Machines- they digest things and brea them down- these parts can be recycled and used by the cell- found in both plant and animal cells
Chloroplasts food factories of the cell- make food- go through photosynthesis- green because of chlorophyll- found in plant cells only
Centrioles helps the cell when its time to divide- function is to assist the cell when its time to divide- normally four by the nucleus- they combine the centrosome- found in animal cells only
Cell wall support gor cell structure- cell wall on the outside of the cell membrane- found in plant cells only

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
