The functions of the major oragan systems
| Term | Definition |

| Cell | Basic unit of function and structure in a living thing. |
| Tissue | Groups of similar cells that preform the same function. |
| Organs | Structures in the body that are composed of different kinds of tissue. |
| Organ systems | Groups of organs that work together to preform a major function in the body. |
| Homeostasis | The process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. |
| Skeletal system (functions) | Supports the body, protects internal organs, allows movement, stores minerals, produces blood cells. |
| Skeletal system (structures) | Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons. |
| Integumentary system (functions) | Guards against infection and injury, and helps regulate body temperature (homeostasis). |
| Integumentary system (structures) | Skin, hair, sweat glands, oil glands. |
| Muscular system (functions) | With the skeletal system it produces movement. Helps circulate blood and move food the the digestive system. |
| Muscular system (structures) | Skeleton, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle. |
| Circulatory system (functions) | Transports nutrients and waste around the body, helps fight infection, helps regulate body temperature (homeostasis). |
