Who can vote in FL? - U.S. citizens - FL residents - 18 year olds - Not a felon - must register & have an ID
Path to election? - Announcement of candidacy - Primary elections - Party conventions - Election campaign - Election
What are the primaries ? Everyone in the party (citizens registered in that party) votes for who they want to represent the party in the presidential election.
What is the cauces? Small group of people who make the decision on who they want to pick as their candidate for their party.
Democratic party - Originated in 1828 and represented the "common man" - Blue - Donkey - Left - Liberal
Republican Party - Originated in 1854, opposed the extension of slavery - Red - Elephant - Right - Conservative
What does it mean by free and fair elections? - People have trust in Democratic institutions - Voters do not have to pay to vote - Free speech allows candidates to campaign & criticize the gov. without fear - Counting of votes are accurate and impartial
Requirements for President - 35 years old, "natural born citizen", and reside in the U.S. for 14 years. - 4 year term; can serve 2 terms
Requirements for U.S. Senator - 30 years old, citizen for 9 years, and must reside in the state he/she is elected in. - 6 year term; no term limit
Requirements for U.S. Representative - 25 years old, citizen for 7 years, and must reside in the state he/she is elected in. - 2 year term; no term limit
Requirements for Governor - 30 years old, resident of FL for 7 years - 4 year term
Requirements for Florida Senator - 21 years old and a resident of FL for 2 years - 4 year term; 8 consecutive years
Requirements for Florida Representative - same as FL senator - 2 year term; 8 consecutive years
What is the electoral college? a set of electors who are are selected to vote for a candidate.
How many votes is require to win the electoral college? 270
How many electors does each state get? Number of senators + number of representatives = electoral votes
Why was the electoral college invented? The Framers of the Constitution felt that they could not trust the people to decide who should be president.
Platform a document stating the goals and principles of a political party or political candidate, also known as a political platform
Bias a preference, opinion or attitude that favors one way of thinking or feeling over another
Interest groups people who are concerned with some particular issue or part of the government and who try to influence legislators or to act in their favor, also known as a special interest group

Watchdog a person or group who acts as a protector or guardian
Propaganda the method of spreading ideas or information for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
