Who is responsible for policies and directives within the military and the government? Civilians assigned to the military and the legislative and executive branches of the government.
What is command authority? The established levels of responsibility for communication throughout a chain of command.
What is the relationship between different levels within the chain of command? Each level in the chain is responsible for all lower levels and accountable to all higher levels.
What is the basic principle established by the U.S. constitution regarding the control of the U.S. armed forces? The U.S armed forces are controlled by civilians.

What is the purpose of the Goldwater-Nichols department of defense reorganization act of 1986? To permit the U.S. President to authorize communications through Chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff.
What is the typical administrative control flow for forces assigned to combatant commanders? From the combatant commanders to their respective service branches.
Who is at top of the league command chain for all U.S. armed forces? The President of the United States.
What is the role of the secretary of defense in the U.S. Armed Forces’ chain of command? To oversee the department of defense and advise the President on military matters.
