androgen any hormone that produces male characteristics
bulbourethral gland a gland beside the urethra and below the prostate; secretes part of the seminal fluid; aka Cowper gland
circumcision surgical removal of the end of the prepuce (foreskin)
coitus sexual intercourse
ductus deferens the duct that conevys spermatozoa from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct; aka vas deferens
ejaculation the release of semen from the male urethra
ejaculatory duct the duct formed by the union of the ductus deferens and the seminal vesicle duct; carries spermatozoa and seminal fluid into the urethra
epididymis a coiled tube on the surface of the testis; stores sperm until ejaculation
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and acts on the gonads; stimulates Sertoli cells and promotes sperm cell development in males; stimulates the ripening ova in females
gamete a mature reproductive cell; spermatozoon in males, ovum in females
glans penis the bulbous end of the penis
gonad a sex gland; testis in males, ovary in females
inguinal canal the channel through which the testis descend into the scrotum
interstitial cells the cells located between the seminiferous tububles that produce hormones, mainly testosterone; aka cells of Leydig
luteinizing hormone (LH) a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland that acts on the gonads; stimulates the interstitial cells to produce testosterone in males, stimulates ovulation and corpus luteum formation in females
meiosis the type of cell division that forms the gametes and results in cells with 23 chromosomes instead of 46 like the other types of body cells
penis the male organ of copulation and urination
prepuce the fold of skin over the glans penis; aka foreskin
prostate gland the gland that surrounds the urethra below the bladder in males; contributes secretions to semen
puberty the period during which sexual reproduction capabilities are obtained and secondary sex characteristic begin to develop
scrotum a double pouch that contains the testes
semen the thick secretion that transports spermatozoa
seminal vesicle a gland behind the bladder that contributes secretion to semen
Sertoli cell the cells in a seminiferous tububle that aids in spermatazoa development; aka sustentacular cells
spermatic cord the cord attached to the testis that contains the ductus deferens, blood vessels, and nerves that are enclosed within a fibrous sheath
spermatazoon a mature male sex cell
testis the male reproductive gland; aka testicle
testosterone the main male sex hormone
urethra the duct that carries urine out of the body; also transports semen in males
