Skeletal System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 5 Main Functions of the Bones | Support, Protection, Movement, Storage, Blood Cell Formation |
| Long Bones Description | Longer than they are wide (Ex: All the bones of the limbs, except the patella and the wrist and ankle bones. ) |
| Short Bones Description | Generally cube-shaped and contain spongy bone (Ex: patella) |
| Flat Bones Description | Thin flat, curved (Ex: Skull breast bone, sternum) |
| Irregular Bones Description | Do not fit in other categories (Ex: Spinal vertebrae) |
| Osteoclasts | Breakdown bone to initiate normal bone remodeling |
| Osteoblasts | form new bones and grow and heal existing bones |
| Osteocytes | Cells inside the bone |
| Osteon (AKA Haversian system) | cylindrical structure found in compact bone tissue. |
| Lamellae | Bone membrane |
| Periosteum | membrane of blood vessels and nerves that wraps around most of your bones |
| Endosteum (AKA Lining Membrane) | Bone lining membrane |
| Lacunae | a cavity or depression in bone. |
| Haversian Canals | Network in bone of blood vessels |
| Bone Matrix | A substance that forms the framework of the bone tissue |
| Volkmann’s Canals | Passageway in the bone |
| Epiphysis | Ends of the bone covered in articular / hyaline cartilage (Used for Cushion an Support) |
| Diaphysis | middle of long bone composed of compact bone (Houses Yellow Bone Marrow) |
| Epiphyseal Line | Line between the Diaphysis and Epiphysis in adult bone |
| Compact bone | used to create most of the skeleton |
| Spongy Bone | Porous bone, filled with blood vessels (vascularized), contains red bone marrow |
| Ossification | The process of bone formation |
| Joint | enabling the body to move |
| 4 Parts of the Skeletal System | Bones, Joints, Ligaments, Cartilage |
| Factors Impacting Bone Growth | Growth, Sex, and Throid Hormones |
| Axial Skeleton contains: | Skull, vertebrae, and the thorax (rib cage) |
| Appendicular Skeleton | Pectoral (shoulder) girdle, appendages (limbs), and the pelvic girdle |
| Synarthrotic | Immovable Joints |
| Amphiarthrotic | Slightly Moveable Joints |
| Diarthrotic | Freely Moveable |
| Synovial Joints | Ex: Like the ball and socket joint where our arms and legs link |
| Cartilaginous Joints | Ex: The disk between each Vertebre |
| Fibrous Joints | Ex: Suture joints of the skull |
