Urinary system complications

acidosis | the excess acidity of body fluids |
bacteruria | the presence of bacteria in the urine |
cast | a solid mold of a renal tububle found in the urine |
cystitis | titular; usually from infection |
glomerulonephritis | titular; the acute form follows infection elsewhere in the body; the chronic form has many causes and usually leads to renal failure |
hydronephrosis | the collection of urine in the renal pelvis caused by obstruction that results in distention and renal atrophy |
nephrotic syndrome | a condition resulting from glomerular damage that leads to proteinuria, hypoproteinemia, and increased blood lipids; aka nephrosis |
renal colic | radiating pain in the kidney region associated with stone passage |
renal failure | the loss of kidney function from a loss of or damage to nephrons; acute or chronic |
uremia | toxic levels of urea and other nitrogenous compounds in the blood due to renal insufficiency |
catheterization | the introduction of a tube into a bodily passage for the withdrawal of urine |
dialysis | the separation of substances by passage through a semipermeable membrane; gets rid of unwanted substances when the kidneys are impaired or gone |
hemodialysis | the removal of unwanted substances from the body via a semipermeable membrane |
intravenous urography (IVU) | the radiographic visualization of the urinary tract with a contrast medium |
peritoneal dialysis | the removal of unwanted substances from the body with a dialyzing fluid inserted into the peritoneal cavity and removal of the fluid afterwards |
retrograde pyelography | a pyelography that has the contrast medium injected into the kidneys via the ureters |
specific gravity (SG) | the weight of a substance compared to the weight of an equal volume of water |
ileal conduit | the diversion of urine via ureter connection to part of the ileum; used when the bladder is impaired or gone |
