angiotensin increased blood pressure activated in the blood by renin
calyx a cup-shaped cavity in the pelvis of the kidney
erythropoietin (EPO) a hormone produced from the kidneys stimulates RBC production in bone marrow
glomerular capsule a cup-shaped capsule at the beginning of the nephron that surrounds the glomerulus receives material filtered out of the blood aka Bowman capsule
glomerulus a cluster of capillareis in the glomerular capsule
kidney the excretion organ filters blood, forms urine, and regulates bodily fluid pH
nephron the functional unit of the kidneys filters blood with blood vessels and balances urine compositon
renal cortex the outer kidney portion contains portions of nephrons
renal medulla the inner kidney portion contains portions of nephrons and ducts to transport urine to the renal pelvis
renal pelvis the expanded upper end of the ureters receives urine from the kidneys
renal pyramid a structure in the renal medulla made of loops and collceting ducts of nephrons
renin an enzyme produced in the kidneys activates angiotensin in the blood
