cell structures
structures found in cell
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| plasma membrane | boundary of the cell, maintains cells integrity, can have proteins embedded in it that perform various tasks |
| endoplasmic reticulum | ribosomes attach here for protein synthesis, processing, packaging, and folding |
| golgi apparatus | synthesizes carbohydrates, combines them with proteins, and then packages the product as globules or glycoproteins |
| vesicles | temporarily contain molecules for transport or later use |
| lysosomes | digestive enzymes that break down defective cell parts and ingest the particles. The cells "digestive system". |
| peroxisomes | enzymes that detoxify harmful substances in the cell |
| mitochondria | catabolism, ATP synthesis, cells powerhouse |
| nucleus | houses genetic code that dictates protein synthesis, important for cell metabolism, transport, and growth |
| ribosomes | site of protein synthesis. known as "protein factories" |
| proteasomes | destroys misfolded or abnormal proteins, known as "quality control" |
| cytoskeleton | supporting framework of cell and organelles, functions in cell movement, forms cell extensions |
| nucleolus | site for ribosome subunit formation |
