Foundations of U.S. Democracy (Rome & Athens)

| civic participation | citizens have to active in their government to make it work |
| voting rights | the power to approve or disapprove laws |
| trial by jury | decisions about a case are made by the people |
| legislative body | a group of people who made laws |
| representative democracy | A system of government in which citizens elect representatives to make decisions about the laws for all the people (Rome) |
| constitution | documents that describe the laws and organization of a nation |
| republic | representatives are elected to run the government for them (Rome) |
| rule of law | everyone had to follow the law no matter how famous or powerful |
| separation of powers | the division of power among the branches of government |
| democracy | a government that gets its power from the people |
| the Assembly | legislative body in Athens made up of citizens |
| Council of 500 | legislative body in Athens that was made up of citizens 30+yrs old and chosen from the 139 regions of Athens based on their population. They served 1 year terms and could serve up to two terms |

| checks and balances | a system that allows each branch of government to limit the power of the other branches to ensure no one branch has too much power |
