NERVOUS SYSTEM
PART 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ASCENDING TRACTS | pathways that transit information via action potentials from the periphery to various parts of the brain |
| TYPE OF ASCENDING TRACT | 1. Spinothalamic 2. Dorsal Column 3. Spinocerebellar |
| SPINOTHALAMIC | pain, temperature, light touch, pressure, tickle, itch sensation |
| DORSAL COLUMN | proprioception, touch, deep pressure, vibration |
| SPINOCEREBELLAR | proprioception to the cerebellum |
| VISUAL CORTEX | the primary cortical region of the brain that receives, integrates, and processes visual information relayed from the retinas |
| PRIMARY SENSORY AREAS | where ascending tracts project and sensations are perceived |
| PRIMARY SENSORY AREAS | includes visual cortex in occipital lobe, primary auditory cortex in temporal lobe and taste area in insula. |
| ASSOCIATION AREAS | cortical adjacent to primary sensory area; involved in the process of recognition |
| ASSOCIATION AREAS | parts of the cerebral cortex that receive inputs from multiple areas |
| ASSOCIATION AREAS | integrate incoming sensory information, and also form connections between sensory and motor areas |
| PRIMARY SOMATIC SENSORY CORTEX/GENERAL SENSORY AREA |
