Methods and Surface Treatment
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Wedging | A method of mixing clay |
| Homogeneous | Even consistency |
| Extrude | Forced through a shape |
| Die | Tool in an extruder that determines size and shape of extrusion |
| Casting | Molding liquid to solid |
| Spring Mold | Small press mold for making pieces to add to larger work |
| Representational | Art or design - Intended to look like something |
| Sgraffito | Scratched design in surface color to expose underneath color |
| Inlay | Insert material into depression |
| Centrifugal | Moving out from center |
| Reasons for wedging clay | 1. Remove air bubbles 2. Make clay homogeneous |
| Bat (tools) | Used for transporting work |
| Rib (tools) | Used for smoothing and shaping |
| Fettling knife (tools) | Used for cutting slabs |
| Modeling tool (tools) | Used for sculpting |
| Trimming tool (tools) | Used for finishing wheel work |
| Calipers (tools) | Used for measuring |
| Slab roller (space between pin and bed determine thickness of slab) | 1. Wedge clay 2. Press the clay flat 3. Roll a thick slab 4. Re-roll the slab thin |
| Clay extruder (the die determines the space of extrusion) | 1. Wedge clay 2. Press the die in the die holder 3. Place clay in the cylinder 4. Walk the plunger down the track |
| Pinch (methods) | Believed to be first method of pottery making (For thin walls allow clay to stiffen before final pinching) |
| Coil (methods) | Make coils thicker than desired thickness (For piece to look level stack coils in hoops) |
| Slab (methods) | Make slabs in plastic state, assemble when leather hard (Miter is best joint, lap is okay, butt is not so good) |
| Mold (methods) | Slip, press, slump, hump -> non-porous, molds require a barrier |
| Sculpt (methods) | Consinder using a model or a picture as a reference -> Build the ruff form first and add details second |
| Wheel (methods) | 1. Always start with clay that is wedged 2.Add water if clay starts to drag 3. Always keep one elbow down 4. Release pressure from the clay slowly |
| Applique (methods) | Adding -> Score and add slip to both pot and piece to be added |
| impressing (methods) | Stamping -> To avoid sticking to the clay, stamp material should be porous |
| Incising (methods) | Carving -> Examples include relief, combing and piercing |
| Slipping (methods) | Adds Color or Texture -> examples include sgraffito, slip trailing and inlay |
| Burnishing (methods) | Smoothing -> A spoon works well for burnishing |
