TermDefinition
Articles of Confederation -First Governments for the new nation. -Refined the former colonies as states and united them as a confederation under one governing authorities.
Shays Rebellion -: A call to reform the Articles of Confederation , eventually resulting in the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. -This demonstrated to the national government that the lead of a center
Bicameral -Having 2 branches
Bill of Rights -The first 10 amendments to the U.S Constitution
Constitutional Convention -Address the problems of a weak central government which is under the Articles of Confederation
Electoral College -Decides who will be the elected president and vice president of the United States
Great Compromise -Established the U.S legislature as a bicameral law making body
New Jersey Plane -Secured the power of the small states limiting each state to one vote in congress
Ratification -Approval of agreement by the state
3/5 Compromise -It determined that three out of every five slaves was counted when determining a state's total population for legislative representation and taxation.
Virgina Plan -Outlined a strong national government with 3 branches
Article V -Explains how the constitution can be changed
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) -States are free to determine their own standards for education and its achievements. -While giving protection to students with disadvantages
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) - Called for improvements in teaching methods, testing to measure programs, and sanctions for underperforming schools
Race to the Top -Incentives offered for states to adopt new national standards or develop their own that requires students to be college/career ready at graduation
USA PATRIOT Act: -Unifying and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruction Terrorism. -This law covered intelligence gather and charing executive branches
Cheacks and balances -Provides each branch of government with individual powers to check the other branches and prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.
Federalist No. 15 -To inform the reader of the safeguards created by the convention -To maintain the separate branches of government -To protect the rights of the people and of the country.
Separation of power - The division of government responsibilities into distinct branches to limit any one branch from exercising the core functions of another
Stakeholderes -An individual or organization that has an interest in the program
Advice and consent -Gives the Senate the responsibility to advise the president about nominees and the authority to consent to (approve or reject) those nominations.
Impeachment -The process of bringing charges against a government official for wrong doing
Pocket Veto -An indirect veto of a legislative bill by the president or a governor by retaining the bill unsigned until it is too late for it to be dealt with
2/3 overrode -To override a veto two-thirds of those present and voting must vote in favor
Veto -A constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body.
