GOV: The Purposes of Government

QuestionAnswer
What is the Government? the formal structure and institutions through which decisions are made for a body of people.
What are the three components of Government? People, Power, and Policies.
Power The Government's authority and ability to get things done.
Policy Any decision made by government in pursuit of a particular goal.
State A political community made up by a group of people that lives within a clearly defined territory.
What are the four characteristics of State? Territory, Population, Government, and Sovereignty.
Sovereignty The Supreme Power of the State to act within its territory.
What are the Functions of Government? First, a government must ensure national security, second, a government must maintain order, third, a government needs to resolve conflicts, and fourth, a government must provide the service, and fifth, a government must provide for the public goods.
Politics the process by which government makes and carries out decisions as to whose interests will be served in society.
Legitimacy When rulers are seen as right and proper by important segments of nation's population.
Divine Right of Kings a theory put forth by Jacques-Benigne Bossuet that the king is answerable only to God, not the people he ruled.
Absolute Not limited by restrictions; unlimited power.
Social Contract Theory Theory of rule that says the first governments formed as a result of people agreeing among themselves to submit to the authority of a state, which in turn would protect and support them.
Leviathan (1651) English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes argues that state of nature is so violent, that government must have great power to defend itself and compel people to obey its laws.
What was John Locke's view of government? His view of the state of nature, people are governed by natural laws. They consent to government solely to protect natural rights including life, liberty, and property.
Wat was Rosseau's "The Social Contract (1762)? Rosseau argues that the only way people could regain their freedom was bu establishing a government that was both based on a social contract and responsive to the "general will of the people.
