Politics the process of influencing the actions and policies of government
Government rules and institutions that make up the system of of policy-making in a country
Democracy power held by the people
Natural rights divine God given right everyone has
Social contract people allow government to rule for a functioning, orderly society, in return they give up some of their rights
American political culture liberty, equality, and rights shape the shared set of beliefs, customs, traditions, and values
Sovereignty right of the government to rule
Popular sovereignty the idea that the government’s right to rule comes from the people
Republicanism authority of the government comes from the people
Inalienable rights self-evident, government can not take them away
Liberty freedom from interference by a gov or freedom to pursue one’s dreams, social, political, and economic freedoms
Participatory democracy a theory that widespread political participation is essential for democratic gov
Civil society groups independent associations outside the government’s control
Pluralist theory a theory of democracy that emphasizes the role of groups in the policy-making process
Elitist theory a theory of democracy that the elites have a disproportionate amount of influence in the policy-making process
Political institutions the structure of gov including the executive, legislature, and judiciary
Constitutional republic a democratic system with elected rep in which the constitution is the supreme law
