What are the 4 major sub-disciplines of genetics? -Transmission genetics (ie. pedigree & punnett squares) -Molecular genetics (ie. gene expression and DNA technologies) -Quantitative genetics (ie. polygenic traits) -Population genetics (ie. frequency of a gene in population)"
What is a model genetic organism? Organism that is useful for studying genetics.
List the 5 qualities an organism must have to be a model organism. 1. The genetic history of the organism is well known 2. Organism reproduces quickly (short gestation period) 3. Mating results in large number of offspring 4. Organisms are easy to handle 5. Genetic variation exists between individuals
Give 6 examples of organisms that are considered “model genetic organisms”. 1. Escherichia coli (E.coli): bacteria found in the human gut 2. Baker’s yeast 3. Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) 4. Mustard Plant 5. Mus musculus (House mouse) 6. Caenorhabditis elegans (nematode worm)"
