Systemic Circulation The branch of the circulatory system that supplies all body organs and then returns oxygen-poor blood to the right atrium via the veins.
Pulmonary circulation Flow of blood through the heart to the lungs and back to the heart (providing rich, nutritious, and oxygenated blood)
Arteries Carry and pump blood away from the heart
Veins Bring blood back to the heart
Pericardium Membranous sac enclosing the heart - keeps heart in place; prevents over-expansion and disease; offers some protection
Parietal pericardium Outer layer of the pericardium
Visceral pericardium Covers the surface of the heart - adhesive
Epicardium Membrane lining the cavities of the heart. Provides a smooth surface for blood so there is no drag
Myocardium Muscular, thick middle layer of the heart
Inherent rhythmicity Involuntary contractions of cardiac muscle at fixed rate
Atrium The two upper chambers of the heart that receives blood that comes into the heart
Ventricle The lower chambers of the heart; little belly; The pump which pumps blood to the body and lungs
Stenosis Abnormal narrowing (of valves)
Insufficiency Failure of a valve to close completely
Anastomosis A point of joining between two blood vessels other than capillaries
Infarction Death of tissue
Coronary Myocardial Infarction (MI) Heart Attack
Sinoatrial (SA) Node A specialized area of cardiac tissue, located in the right atrium of the heart, which initiates the electrical impulses that determine the heart rate; often termed the pacemaker for the heart.
Atrioventricular (AV) Node a node of specialized heart muscle located in the septal wall of the right atrium; receives impulses from the sinoatrial node and transmits them to the atrioventricular bundle
