week 1-6

TermDefinition
Levels of organization - chemical level - organelle level - cellular level - tissue level - organ level - system level
chemical level atoms ----> molecules---->macromolecules
organelle level chemical structures may be organized within larger units called CELLS to form ORGANELLES (tiny organs)
types of organelles: - mitochondria: powerhouse--> provide energy needed by the cellto carry on day-to-day function, growth and repair
GOLGI APPARATUS "packaging" - also called the Golgi complex - storing material for future use or for export from the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)- network of channels - "highway" for the movement of chemicals and as site for chemical processing
Cellular level- cells -cells are the SMALLEST and most numerous structural unit. - different cells perform unique functions: 1. fat cells-permits storage of fat 2. cardiac muscles- contract with great force
Tissue - is a group of a great SIMILAR cells - are surrounded by the matrix - 4 major tissue types: 1. epitheilial 2. connective 3. muscle 4. nervous
organs structure made up of several kinds of TISSUES
system level- most complex involves varying numbers of differnt kinds of ORGANS
Ipsilateral >< Contralateral same side >< opposite side
medullary inner region or core of an organ Ex: innerregion of kidney= medulla
cortical outer region or layer of an organ ex: outer layer of kidney tissue= cortex
basal base or widest part of an organ
apical marrow tip of an organ= apical point (heart)
Body planes 1. sagittal= divide body into L&R side 2. coronal or frontal plane= divide into anterior and posterior portions 3. Transverse plane or horizontal plane= divide into upper and lower part 4. Longitudinal section = a cut along axis of the organ 5. obliqu
body cavities 1. dorsal cavities: inclues cranial cavity (stores the brain) and spinal cavity (location of the spinal cord) 2. Ventral cavities: thoracic and abdominopelvic

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
