Expert Learning Vocabulary List (Executive Functioning)

TermDefinition
Executive Functioning a set of cognitive processes that allow individuals to plan, organize, and manage their thoughts, actions, and time effectively. It involves skills such as attention, inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility.
Metacognition the ability to think about and have awareness of one's own cognitive processes. It involves understanding and controlling one's thoughts, learning strategies, and problem-solving techniques.
Baseline the starting point or reference point against which other measurements or changes are compared. It provides a standard for comparison or evaluation.
Multiple Modalities the use of different sensory channels or learning styles to acquire and process information. It involves engaging various senses such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic in the learning process.
Pomodoro Technique a time management method that involves breaking work into focused intervals called "Pomodoros," typically lasting 25 minutes, followed by short breaks. It aims to improve productivity and concentration.
Retrieval the process of recalling or bringing information or memories back into conscious awareness from long-term memory storage. It involves accessing and recalling previously learned knowledge.
Goal Setting the process of establishing specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives that guide one's actions and efforts toward desired outcomes.
Time Management the ability to effectively allocate and prioritize one's time to accomplish tasks and activities efficiently. It involves planning, organizing, and utilizing time wisely.
Study Skills a range of techniques and strategies used to enhance learning and improve academic performance. These skills may include note-taking, active reading, summarizing, and mnemonic devices.
Organization the process of arranging and structuring information, materials, or tasks in a systematic and orderly manner. It involves creating a logical framework for efficient access and retrieval.
Planning Developing a detailed and systematic approach to achieving a specific goal or completing a task. It includes identifying necessary steps, allocating resources, and setting timelines.
Emotional Regulation the ability to recognize, understand, and effectively manage one's emotions in different situations. It involves strategies to regulate and control emotional responses.
Self-monitoring the process of observing and evaluating one's own thoughts, behaviors, and performance. It involves being aware of one's actions and making adjustments as needed.
Self-evaluation the process of critically assessing one's own performance, progress, or abilities. It involves reflecting on strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth.
Problem-solving the cognitive process of finding solutions or strategies to overcome challenges or obstacles. It involves analyzing the problem, generating possible solutions, and evaluating their effectiveness.
Decision-making the process of selecting a course of action or choosing among various alternatives based on careful consideration of available information, risks, and desired outcomes.
Reflection the act of thinking deeply and critically about one's experiences, actions, or knowledge. It involves considering the significance, outcomes, and lessons learned.
Goal Adjustment the process of modifying or changing one's goals in response to new information, changing circumstances, or reassessment of priorities.
Planning Fallacy a cognitive bias where individuals tend to underestimate the time, effort, or resources required to complete a task or project. It often leads to unrealistic expectations and delays.
Cognitive Flexibility the ability to adapt and shift one's thinking or approach in response to changing circumstances or demands. It involves mental agility, the capacity to switch between different tasks, perspectives, or problem-solving strategies.
Interleaving the technique of intentionally mixing different types of problems or concepts within a single study session or practice session. It involves alternating between different topics or skills rather than focusing on one topic at a time.
