| Homeostasis | “Standing or staying the same". Stable equilibrium |
| Hypothalamus | is an area of the brain that produces hormones that control: Body temperature. Heart rate. Hunger. Mood. |
| Elements | An element is said to be “pure” in the sense that it cannot be broken down or decom-posed into two or more different substances. |
| Atoms | basic unit of a chemical element. |
| Free Radical | is a functional group that is temporarily unattached and is highly reactive because of unpaired electrons. |
| Carbohydrates | compounds contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen-usually in the ratio of 1:2:1. |
| Cell | smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body. Contains 3 parts: cell membrane, the nucleus, and the cytoplasm |
| Plasma Membrane | The outer boundary of the cell. |
| Osmosis | is the passive movement of water through a semipermeable membrane. |
| Inflammation | in response to allergens, which are substances that trigger such allergic responses. |
