| Hypodermis | subcutaneous layer, or superficial fascia. It is not always considered to be part of the skin. |
| Syndrome | collection of different signs and symptoms that occur together |
| Catabolism | Chemical reactions that not only break down relatively complex compounds into simpler ones but also release energy from them. |
| Anabolism | Chemical reactions that join simple molecules together to form more complex biomolecules |
| Carbohydrates | Compounds contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen—usually in the ratio of 1:2:1 |
| Monosaccharides | Simple sugars, are relatively small carbohydrates |
| Lipids | Water-insoluble organic biomolecules |
| Golgi apparatus | Stack of flattened sacs (cisternae) surrounded by vesicles. |
| Vesicles | Tiny membranous bags |
| Microvilli | Short, fingerlike extensions of plasma membrane; |
| Gap junctions | Membrane channels of adjacent plasma membranes connect to each other. |
| Tight junctions | Joined near their apical surfaces by “collars” of tightly fused membrane. |
| Simple diffusion | Higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
