Abstruse adj. Hard to understand
Abut to border upon; to adjoin. Other form: abutting (adj)
Abyss n. bottomless pit; a yawning gulf; a profound depth or void
Accolade n. an award, an honor; approval, praise
Adjunct n. Something connected or added to another in a subordinate position; an assistant
Affidavit n. a sworn written statement
Affinity n. A natural attraction; kinship; similarity
Aftermath n. Events following some occurrence; a consequence of
Aggrandize v. to increase in size; enlarge, to cause to appear greater in power, influence. Other forms: aggrandizement (n)
Ajar adj. Partially open
Alienate v. to make hostile; to cause to feel unwelcome or estranged
Alleviate v. to make less severe; to relieve; to lessen
Allegory Written work that uses symbolic figures, objects, and actions to convey truths or generalizations about human conduct or experience.
Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds occurring at the beginning of words (at least three words). Example: The sailor slipped and sailed through the sky.
