Public Opinion The collected attitudes of citizens concerning a given issue or question.
Characteristics of Public Opinion Place boundaries on allowable public policy, government tend to respond to public opinion, government sometimes doesn't want what the people want.
Political Socialization The complex process by which people acquire their values.
How political socialzation occurs? Family, Community and Peers, and Continuing socialization
How different social groups differ on order and equality Levels of education, household income, region of US, ethnic group, religion, and gender
What are the ideology types and how do they place on the freedom, order, and equality matrix? Liberals - (EFO) Conservatives - (OFE) Libertarians - (FEO) Communitarians - (EOF)
Federal Communications Commission An independent federal agency that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, telephone, and more.
Equal Time or Opportunities Rule US radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to any opposing candidate that requests it
Right of Rebuttal States that a person who is attacked on public television or radio must be given a chance to respond to the attack on the air
Near v. Minnesota Prohibits prior restraint to violate freedom of the press as its protected under the First Amendment.
Political Participation Action of private citizens by which they seek to influence or support government and politics
Conventional Participation Relatively routine behavior that uses the established institutions of representative government, especially campaigning for candidates and voting in elections
Unconventional Participation Relatively uncommon behavior that challenges or defies established institutions or the dominant culture (stressful to participants and their opponents)
Effectiveness of unconventional participation Does work, even though it may provoke violence.
Direct political Action unconventional participation that involves assembling crowds to confront local government to demand a hearing. Appeals most to those who both distrust the political system and have a strong sense of political efficacy.
Supportive Behaviors Action that expresses allegiance to government and country (Pledge of Allegiance)
Influencing Behaviors Behavior that seeks to modify or reverse government policy to serve political interests. Broad policy objectives influence behaviors.
