Digestion system

( due friday)

TermDefinition
Digestion Is the process by which food is broken down small nutrients
Mechanical Digestion The physical breakdown of food by chewing or churning
Chemical Digestion The chemical breakdown of food by enzymes (saliva, insulin, and bile) produced by the pancreas and liver.
Amylase Amylases digest starch into smaller molecules and converts starch and glycogen into simple sugars
Epiglottis The flap that covers the trachea during swallowing so that food does not enter the lungs.
Esophagus Pathway between mouth and stomach
Peristalsis moves food through your digestive system, beginning in your throat when you swallow and continuing through your esophagus, stomach and intestines while you digest.
Stomach Churns the food (mechanical digestion) Adds gastric juices to the food.(hci and the enzyme pepsin (chemical digestion) of protein
Pepsin is the principal enzyme involved in protein digestion. It breaks down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids that can be easily absorbed in the small intestine.
Bile a bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid that aids digestion and is secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.
liver the largest organ that cleanses the blood and aids in digestion by secreting bile.
gallbladder stores and concentrates bile from the liver,it helps your body to break down and absorb fats from food.
insulin a hormone that helps control your body's blood sugar level and metabolism. turns the food you eat into energy. Insulin helps your body use sugar for the energy it needs, and then store the rest.
pancreas It makes pancreatic juices, which contain enzymes that help in digestion, and it produces several hormones, including insulin.
small intestine breaks food down into liquid and most of its nutrients are absorbed. The waste is passed on to the large intestine.
large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes, produces and absorbs vitamins, and forms and sends feces toward the rectum for elimination.
rectum collects and holds your feces until it's time to release it.
enzymes helps speed up chemical reactions in our bodies and are essential for digestion and liver function
