What was the Harrying of the North? William retaliated against the north and lay waste to most of the area, destroying homes and leaving many to starve.
What happened in East Anglia from 1070-71? Morecar met with Hareward the Wake and the rebels led guerrilla-style raids. They stored their supplies on the island of Ely.
What did the East Anglia rebels do in 1070? The looted and burned the abbey of Peterborough.
What happened to the East Anglia rebels in 1070? Swein of Denmark made a deal with William I, Morecar spent the remainder of his life as a prisoner but Hareward continued to bother William.
What did William do in Ely after 1070? He built siege towers that Hareward burnt down, but the rebels were soon betrayed and the local monks led William to them. Most of the defenders surrendered but Hareward disappeared.
What happened in 1075? Several Norman earls revolted against William. Danish men were also involved, with a fleet of 200 ships being sent to England. Lanfranc dealt with the rebellion as he was acting as regent, as an army was raised to deal with it.
What happened in 1072? Malcolm III invaded England and managed to devastate Durham and Cleveland. William retaliated in the autumn and Malcolm quickly surrendered.
What happened in 1079? William sent Robert Curthose to deal with Malcolm attacking England, when he surrendered again at Falkirk. Robertbegan building castles on the Tyne to show Norman power.
What happened in 1085? Danish royals, the Count of Flanders and the King of Norway all threatened to invade and this may have led to the creation of the Domesday Survey.
What happened in 1081? Cnut, Swein's son, reasserted his claim to throne, prompting William to return from Normandy and raise a heavy geld tax. Cnut raised a fleet, but was killed in 1086.
What happened in 1088? A major rebellion was led against William II with Odo of Bayeux at the centre. Six out of ten of the land owners in the Domesday Book participated in the rebellion. Despite this, William raised an impressive force and divided the ranks.
What happened to Odo of Bayeux in 1088? He fled his fortress in Rochester, Kent and went to Pevensey, Sussex. He was caught and returned to Rochester but was aided until he was eventually forced to surrender.
What happened in 1095? Robert of Mowbray refused to appear in court after stealing the goods of traders and he did not appear in the royal court. Several other barons rejected Rufus' judgement and were punished as a result.
What happened in 1091? Malcolm attempted to invade England once more but failed due to the might of Rufus' army and was forced to swear fealty to him.
What happened in 1092? William wished to put all of the north-west under his authority and led a large army to drive out Dolfin.
What happened in 1094? William instructed his leaders to monitor the activities of the Scottish following the death of Malcolm.

What happened in 1100? William II died and Henry I took the throne. Ranulf Flambard and Robert Curthose attempted to take the throne and he had support but was quickly crushed.
What happened in 1102? Henry began a plan to take over Normandy and started by deporting Robert of Bellème to France and confiscating his land.
What happened in 1103? Henry made an effort to gain allies in Normandy. He gained allies in Normady, Maine and Anjou through bribes of marriages and money.

What happened in 1105? Hebry launched his first military expedition to Normandy and secured the Western sector.
What happened in 1106? Henry returned to Normandy supported by the counts of Brittany and Maine. They attacked the the fortress of Robert of Montain, one of Robert’s most important fortresses.
What happened to the fortress in the battle of 1106? The castle of Tinchebrai was put under siege by Henry’s army and Mortain and Curthose had to surrender, being imprisoned for life.
