Function of olfactory nerves | carries sensory information for the special sense of smell |
Function of optic nerves | transmits sensory information from the retina to the brain for the special sense of sight |
Function of oculomotor nerves | conducts motor info to 4/6 extraocular eye muscles that control movement of the eye, conducts motor info to the intraocular eye muscles that control the size of the pupil and the shape of the lens |
Function of trochlear nerves | innervates the superior oblique muscle to conduct motor movement in the eye |
Function of the trigeminal nerves | conducts general sensory information from the scalp, forehead, nose, cheeks, lower jaw, gums, and teeth, conducts motor information to skeletal muscles involved in mastication (chewing) |
Function of abducens nerves | innervates the lateral rectus muscle in each eye to conduct motor movement |
Function of facial nerves | conducts sensory information from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue for the sense of taste, conducts motor information to the muscles responsible for facial expression |
Function of vestibulocochlear nerves | conducts sensory signals to the brain regarding equilibrium (balance) and audition (hearing) |
Function of glossopharyngeal nerves | conducts sensory taste info from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue & sensory info from the pharyngeal walls to the brain, conducts motor information to the stylopharyngeus muscle of the throat to allow for the elevation of the pharynx during swallowing |
Function of vagus nerves | visceralsensory info from the heart, lungs, & abdominal organs, generalsensory info from the laryngopharynx & pharynx, somatic motor info to skeletalmuscles in the pharynx & larynx, & visceral motorinfoto smoothmuscles-organs thoracic & abdominal cavities |
Functions of spinal accessory nerves | conducts motor info to muscles of the neck that move the head, specifically the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles |
Functions of the hypoglossal nerves | conducts motor info to the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue |
Tests of olfactory nerves | waft unknown odors to try and identify scent |
Tests of optic nerves | reading time with one or both eyes, pressing on side of eye, blind spot test, colorblindness test |
Tests of oculomotor nerves | tracking finger with eyes, direct light reflex test, consensual light reflex test, accommodation reflex test |
Tests of trochlear nerves | tracking finger with eyes |
Tests of trigeminal nerves | identify touch to the face without sight, moving mandible |
Tests of abducens nerves | tracking finger with eyes |
Tests of facial nerves | pepsi v. coke flavor discrimination, facial expressions |
Test of vestibulocochlear nerves | spin in chair and look at eyes for nystagmus, touching tuning fork to skull to detect sound |
Tests of glossopharyngeal nerves | gag reflex test |
Tests of vagus nerves | palpate muscles for swallowing while swallowing |
Tests of accessory nerves | resisting applied pressure to the head and shoulders |
Tests of the hypoglossal nerves | voluntary tongue movements |
