What are the 6 nutrients needed for good health? protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water.
How do you get all of the nutrients you need? you need to eat a variety of foods to getall nutrients.
What is the function of protein? needed for growth and matenance, and repair of tissues.
What are food sources of protein? meat, fish, eggs, dried beans, milk, peas nuts and seeds.
What happens if you do not get enough protein in your diet? slow growth and may develop infections easier
What is the main function of carbohydrates? main source of energy
What foods are sources of carbohydrates? sugars, starches, anf fiber.
What are the three carbohydrates and the function of each? sugars area quick source of energy, starches provide longer lasting energy and fiber does not provide energy but aids in digestion
What happens if you get too many carbohydrates in your diet? you gain weight.
What is the function of fat? isulates and protects vital organs
What foods are sources of fat? butter, mayo, meats cheeses and salad dressing
What happens if you get too much fat in your diet? overweight
What are the functions of water? digests food and regulates body temp
How much water should you get each day? 8-8 oz
Compare and contrast water soluble and fat soluble vitamins. you need to eat one everyday and the other you dont
Define deficiencies. shortage
What is the function of Vitamin A? keeps skin in good condition
What foods are sources of Vitamin A? yellow and green veggies, fruit and animal fat
What is the function of B Vitamins? helps release energy from food
What foods are sources of B Vitamins? grains, green leafy veggies, legumes, meat, and milk
What happens if pregnant women don’t get enough folic acid in their diet? increased birth defects
What are the functions of Vitamin c? helps broken bones mend and wounds heal, also helps the body use some nutrients, helps the body resist infection
What foods are sources of Vitamin C? citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, and tomaoes
What is the function of Vitamin D? helps the body use some minerals needed to build bones and teeth
What foods are sources of Vitamin D? some fish and fortified in milk
What is the function of Vitamin E? keeps oxygen in the body from dissolving other nutrients
What foods are sources of Vitamin E? vegtable oil, whole grains, eggs, and green leafy veggies
What is the function of Vitamin K? helps the blood clot
What foods are sources of Vitamin K? green leafy veggies, cauliflower, liver, and egg yolks
Define trace minerals. found only in small amounts in the body
What is the function of calcium and phosphorus? needed for strong bones and teeth
What are food sources of calcium and phosphorus? fish;milk products; and green, leafy veggies.
What is the function of sodium, chlorine, and potassium? help to keep the right amount of fluid inside and around cells
What are food sources of sodium, chlorine and potassium? table salt, bananas, orange juice, and milk
What happens if you get too much sodium in your diet? high blood pressure
What happens if you get too much potassium? it can be toxic
What is the function of iron? needed for healthy red blood cells
What foods are sources of iron? liver, fish, eggs, and dried beans.
Define anemia. the lack of iron
What is the function of iodine? helps the thyroid gland produce a horomone that affects growth
What foods are sources of iodine? iodized salt, and saltwater fish.
Define goiter. swelling of thyroid gland
What causes goiters? not enough iodine
What is the function of fluoride? needed for the proper development of teeth and bones
What are sources of fluoride? meats, eggs, milk, toothpaste (not a food dont eat) and some water.
What are nutritional needs based on? based on age, sex, body build, lifestyle and health.
Define recommended daily allowances. standards to help people know the amounts of nutrients they need.
