Boomburbs An outlying residential district of a city that is expanding rapidly.
Periphery Country Tends to be less-developed countries that are economically poor
SemiPeriphery Country Countries lower than core but higher than periphery
Mega city A city with a population of over 10 million people
Meta city A city with a population of over 20 million people
Edge Cities A relatively large urban area situated on the outskirts of a city
Exurbs Residential communities that extend past suburbs
Filtering (Urban development) Process of subdivision of houses and occupany by successive waves of lower income
Global cities Very influential outside their national boundaries
Central Place Theory Used to explain distribution of cities across a region
Multiple Nuclei Model More than one center
Concentric Zone Model Model used to show that social groups
Galactic City Model CBD are surrounded by smaller cities that often copy the functions of a CBD
Griffin Ford Model CBD includes market and high quality jobs
Urban Hierarchy A ranking of settlements according to their size and economic functions
Sector Model Model used to show urban development that is based on sectors
Smart Growth Policies Laws that are more sustainable friendly and focus on building environmentally friendlier developments
New Urbanism Encourage local community development and sustainable growth (urban)
Greenbelts A ring of land
Slow Growth Cities Urban communities where the planners have put into placement growth initiatives to decrease the rate at which the city groups
Zoning Ordinances A law that limits the permitted uses of land and maximum density of development in a community
Invasion and Succession Process by which new groups to a city move to and dominate or take over areas or neighborhoods occupier by older groups
Suburbanization of Business The movement of businesses to the suburbs to take advantage of a large labor force
Municipal A city or town that has corporate status and local government at a low price
Blockbusting A process by which real estate agents convince white people to sell their houses because persons of color will move in the area
Redlining Racially discrimitory, illegal practice of devaluing homes in racially mixed neighborhoods
Gentrification The process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of poorer residents
Zones of Abandonment Areas that have been deserted in a city for economic or environmental reasons (Urban areas that do not have structures)
Brownfield A property which has the presence or potential to be a hazardous waste, pollutant, or a contaminant
Urban Redevelopment Nodal Cities
Suburbanization People moving from cities to move to more residential areas, usually on the outskirts of the city
Urbanization The process by which people live and are employed in a city
