Unit 9-1 vocabulary

Nerve Impulse vocab

TermDefinition
Potential Difference The difference in charges between 2 regions. Measured in volts.
Polarized An unequal distribution of positive and negative ions across a cell membrane causes it to become this.
Depolarized a condition in which the inside of a cell membrane is more positively charged than the outside.
Repolarized Return to resting state of neuron when a membrane potential that has been depolarized returns toward the resting value, it is ___.
Resting Potential The difference in electric charge between the inside and outside of a non stimulated neurons membrane.
Action Potential Rapid sequence of depolarization and repolarization of a neurons membrane.
Hyperpolarization The movement of the membrane potential of a cell away from rest potential in a more negative direction.
Synaptic Knob rounded areas on the end of the axon terminals.
Synaptic Cleft The narrow gap that separates the presynaptic neuron from the postsynaptic cell.
Neurotransmitters chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between neurons.
action potential a neural impulse; a brief electrical charge that travels down an axon.
Threshold Stimulus stimulation level that must be exceeded to elicit a nerve impulse or a muscle contraction.
Axon Hillock Cone shaped region of an axon where it joins the cell body.
Permeability the state or quality of a material or membrane that causes it to allow some materials to pass through it.
Diffusion Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
