| Political Socialization Factors | Peer group, Economic status, Age, Family, Education, Mass media, Opinion leaders. |
| Public Opinion | the collective opinion on a specific topic or voting intention relevant to society. |
| Political socialization | The development of traditions, values, and ideologies that form over time. |
| Straight ticket voting | Always a specific party. |
| Who votes Republicans | Higher income, Professionals/Businessmen, High school graduates, Men, Older than 50, South, Protestant. |
| Political Efficacy | The citizens' trust in their ability to change the government and belief that they can understand and influence political affairs. |
| Public opinion poll | Interviews or surveys with samples of citizens that are used to estimate the feelings & beliefs of the entire population. |
| Straw poll | an unofficial ballot conducted as a test of opinion |
| Suffrage | the right to vote |
| Split ticket voting | Casting votes for candidates of one's own party and for candidates of opposing parties, e.g., voting for a Republican presidential candidate and a Democratic congressional candidate. |
| 15th Amendment | The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. |

| Who votes Democrats | Lower income, Members of labor unions, College graduates, Women, Younger than 30, Urban, Catholics. |

| Stage 2 | 15th Amendment is ratified, but African Americans remain disenfranchised. |
| Stage 3 | 19th Amendment is ratified. |
| Stage 4 | Voting Rights Act 1965, 3rd Amendment and 24th Amendment is ratified. |
| Stage 5 | 26th Amendment is ratified. |
| Stage 6 | Will congress pass laws restricting states rights on voting procedures? Will Supreme Court challenges to state laws lead to change? |
