| arteries | blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart |
| atria | receiving chambers for blood in the heart |
| bicuspid valve | valve separating the left ventricle and atrium |
| blood pressure | the force blood exerts against the inner walls of blood vessels |
| bradycardia | heart rate that is substantially lower than normal |
| coronary arteries | carries the blood supply that nourishes the heart |
| diastole | heart relaxation |
| ischemia | lack of an adequate blood supply to the heart |
| murmurs | abnormal or unusual heart sounds |
| myocardium | thick layer of cardiac muscle; layer of the heart that actually contracts |
| myocardial infarction | death of oxygen-deprived heart cell; “heart attack” |
| pulmonary circulation | the path of blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs and back to the heart |
| sinoatrial node | a tiny cell mass found above the right atrium that starts and controls each heartbeat; pacemaker |
| stroke volume | the amount of blood pumped out by each ventricle every heartbeat |
| systemic circulation | path of blood from the left side of the heart through the body tissues and back to the heart |
| systole | heart contraction |
| tachycardia | abnormally high heart rate |
| tricuspid valve | valve separating the right atrium and ventricle |
| veins | blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart |
| ventricles | pumping chambers of the heart |
| anemia | a decrease in the oxygen-carrying ability of blood |
| antigen | protein markers on foreign bodies that allow the host to recognize it as foreign |
| basophils | rarest WBC, contains histamine and involved with inflammation |
| embolus | condition where a clot within a blood vessel breaks away from the vessel wall and floats in the bloodstream |
| eosinophils | WBCs that respond to parasitic worm infections |
| erythrocytes | red blood cells |
| hematopoiesis | the process of blood cell formation |
| hemoglobin | an iron-bearing protein found in RBCs that transport the oxygen in blood |
| hemophilia | any of several different hereditary bleeding disorders that result from a lack of any of the factors needed for clotting |
| leukocyte | white blood cell |
| lymphocytes | second most numerous WBC |
| megakaryocytes | fragments of multicellular cells that become platelets |
| monocytes | largest WBC, important in fighting off chronic infections like tuberculosis |
| neutrophils | most numerous WBC, help to fight off bacteria and fungi |
| plasma | liquid portion of blood that makes up 55% of its composition |
| platelets | irregular cell fragment in blood involved in clotting |
| sickle cell anemia | disease where abnormally shaped RBCs cause problems in the body |
| thrombus | a clot that develops and persists in an unbroken blood vessel |
