| cranial cavity | formed by the skull bones and containing the brain |
| vertebral canal | formed by vertebrae and containing the spinal cord |
| thoracic cavity | formed by the ribs, muscles of the chest, the sternum, and part of the vertebral column |
| pericardial cavity | the fluid-filled space that surrounds the heart between the visceral and parietal layers of the pericardium |
| pericardium | a loose-fitting membrane that encloses and protects the heart |
| *mediastinum | area on the thoracic cavity between the pleurae of the lungs that extends from the sternum to the vertebral column and from the first rib to the diaphragm |
| pleural cavity | the area on the interior of the chest cavity that consists of the lungs |
| abdominopelvic cavity | extends from the diaphragm to the groin and is encircled by the abdominal wall and the bones and muscles of the pelvis |
| abdominal cavity | the superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity |
| pelvic cavity | the inferior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity |
