Types of Pathogens
5 types of pathogens
| Term | Definition |

| pathogens | organisms that are capable of causing diseases in humans |
| bacteria | single-celled organisms (do not multiple in the body). |
| examples of bacterial infections | include E-coli, some food borne illnesses, strep, ear/nose infection |
| virus | non-living agents that enter our body & multiple. |
| examples of viral infections | chicken pox, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the common cold, COVID. |
| fungal diseases | caused by fungi |
| examples of fungal infections | athlete’s foot, nail infections, and yeast infections. |
| protozoa | single-celled animals. They produce diseases that are most common in areas of the world where clean water and sanitation are not adequate. |
| example of protozoal infection | malaria |
| parasites | large, many-celled organisms that you can often see with the naked eye. |
| examples of parasites | tapeworms, lice, and leeches. |
| direct contact | spreads the pathogen through physical contact between an infected person and an uninfected person. |
| indirect contact | includes contact with infectious droplets (from coughing or spitting). This contact can also come from pathogens on environmental surfaces. Such surfaces are medical devices, phones, or doorknobs. |
