Terms of the Integumentary Systems LO 5.1

| skin/integument | largest body organ |
| 3 main layers of skin | epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous or hypodermis |
| epidermis | outer layer of skin, ranges from 1/200 to 1/20 of an inch thick and consists of several strata |
| squamous epithelium | cells that make up the epithelium |
| stratified squamous epithelium | the layers that make up the squamous epithelium |
| melanocyte | cell in epidermis that produces the pigment melanin |
| subcutaneous | layer of skin containing fatty tissue |
| keratin | a waterproof barrier that keeps microorganisms out and moisture in, they fill up the cells in the stratum corneum |
| stratum corneum | top sublayer of the epidermis |
| stratum germinativum | bottom layer of the epidermis where new cells are produced |
| found in dermis layer | connective tissue that holds many capillaries, lymph cells, nerve endings, sebaceous and sweat glands, and hair follicles. |
