tirade extended scolding: long, angry speech denouncing something
anthypophora When you pose a question for dramatic effect and then immediately answer it yourself. Also known as hyprophora
ravenous extremely hungry
vernacular 1) Language or dialect of a particular country. 2) Language or dialect of a regional clan or group. 3) Plain everyday speech
homogeneous composed of identical parts
diacope Repetition of a phrase or word, broken up by other intervening words.
autonomous self-governing
hyperbole A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used to achieve emphasis. The emphasis is on exaggeration rather than literal representation
tantamount equivalent in effect value
bandwagon The argument that, because the majority believes/does something, so should everyone else.
austere forbiddingly stern; severely simple and unornamented
metonymy A figure of speech in which something is referred to by using the name of something that is associated with it.
equivocal unclear in meaning; intentionally misleading
alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words.
nonchalance indifference; casual lack of concern
parenthetical idea Used to set off an idea from the rest of the sentence. It is almost considered an aside, and should be used sparingly for effect, rather than repeatedly.
coalesce combine; fuse
pun A play on words. It is created by using a word that has two different words with similar meanings, for a playful effect.
satire To ridicule or mock ideas persons events or doctrines or to make fun of human foibles or weaknesses.
