A&P-Chapter 3

QuestionAnswer
What is the cell membrane composed of? Phospholipid bilayer with hydrophilic surfaces and hydrophobic interior.
What can membrane proteins function as? Anchors, receptors, markers, enzymes, carriers, or channels
Integral proteins Comprised part of the membrane.
Peripheral proteins Bound to either inner or outer surfaces.
Microfilaments Thin actin filaments that function in movement, anchoring, and consistency
Intermediate filaments Intermediate size keratin filaments that function in shape and stabilization
Microtubules Thick tubular filaments that function in organelle and vesicular movement; mitosis
Microvilli Cell extensions that increase surface area
Cilia Hairlike cell extensions that help transport materials
Ribosomes Site of protein synthesis
Where are ribosomes found? Rough ER Cytoplasm
Ribosomes use RNA to make ________. Proteins
Smooth ER Synthesized lipids/carbs and stores carbohydrates; serves as a factory
What are the chambers called in the endoplasmic reticulum? Cisternae
Rough ER Has ribosomes; synthesizes, modifies, packages proteins into vesicles
Golgi apparatus Stacks of membranous discs with chambers; receives vesicles from ER at cis face and release them in vesicles at trans face
Lysosomes Vesicles with digestive enzymes; garbage disposal
What happens at the mitochondria? Site of ATP production
What are the inner folds of the mitochondria called? Cristae
Membrane is _______ _________, only certain substances move across it. Selectively permeable
Substances that do not require energy to move through membrane are _______. Passive
Substances that do require energy to move through membrane are ________. Active
Simple diffusion Diffuse directly across membrane
Diffusion Movement from high to low concentration.
What is diffusion affected by? temp, molecular size, gradient size, and distance of diffusion
Ions/H20 diffuse across mem. through ________ __________. Protein channels
Osmosis water will diffuse toward higher solute concentration
Isotonic solution Has equal conc. of solutes as inside cell.
Hypotonic solution Has lower conc. of solutes than inside cell
Hypertonic solution Has higher conc. of solutes than inside cell
Facilitated diffusion Movement from high to low concentration; proteins bind molecules, changes shape, moves them across membrane
Active transport Movement from low to high concentration; protein pump binds ions, uses ATP, pumps ions across membrane.
Vesicular transport Movement of materials across membrane through membranous sacs.
Endocytosis Materials packaged into vesicles and imported into cell.
Pinocytosis Imports fluid
Phagocytosis Membrane extends pseudopodia that engulfs material.
Exocytosis Materials packed into vesicles and exported out of cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
