A&P Body Cavities

dorsal cavity located on the posterior side of the body (contains cranial and vertebral cavity)
ventral cavity located on the anterior side of the body (contains thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity)
cranial cavity contains the brain
vertebral cavity contains the spinal cord
thoracic cavity upper torso, contains the heart, lungs, and major vessels
mediastinum area between the lungs
inferior mediastinum contains the heart and surrounding pericardia
superior mediastinum contains major blood vessels and thymus gland
diaphragm what separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity
superior abdominal cavity contains the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, kidneys, and part of the large intestine
pelvic cavity contains the reproductive organs, the urinary bladder, and part of the large intestine
serous membranes -outer (parietal) layer that attaches to the cavity -inner (visceral) layer that adheres to an organ -lines the inside walls of the ventral cavities and cover most of the internal and visceral organs
pleura serous membranes associated with the lungs
parietal pleura lines thoracic cavity
visceral pleura covers the lungs
pleural cavity separates the parietal pleura and visceral pleura, contains fluid to help reduce friction
visceral pericardium covers the heart
pericardial cavity separates the visceral and parietal cavity
parietal pericardium lines the fiberous pericardium within the inferior mediastinum
parietal peritoneum lines the abdominopelvic cavity
visceral peritoneum covers most organs in abdominopelvic cavity
peritoneal cavity thin space between the visceral peritoneum and parietal peritoneum
retroperitoneal organs not surrounded by peritoneal membrane
