Spinal column anatomy, functions & abnormalities
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What functions does the spinal column serve? | supports the rest of the body, encloses spinal cord, protecting it, and provide points of attachment for muscles, allowing them to create movement. |
| What is the importance of the intervertebral discs? | provides support for spinal column, protecting vertebrae from compressive forces. |
| Vertebra | one single bone |
| Vertebrae | multiple vertebra |
| How many vertebrae total? | 32-34 vertebrae |
| How many cervical vertebae | 7 |
| Where are the cervical vertebrae | neck |
| What are the cervical vertebrae called? | C1-C7 C1 is atlas C2 is axis |
| Which vertebra articulates with the skull, and allows the skull to "nod"? | C1 (atlas) |
| Which vertebra articlates with c1 and has a toothlike process that allows the skull to rotate? | C2 (axis) |
| Where are the thoracic vertebrae? | attached to the ribcage |
| How many thoracic vertebrae are there? | 12 |
| What are the names of the thoracic vertebrae? | T1 - T12 |
| Where are the lumbar vertebrae? | lower back |
| How many lumbar vertebrae are there? | 5 |
| What are the names of the lumbar vertebrae | L1-L5 |
| Where are the sacral vertebrae? | in the sacrum on the posterior side of the pelvis, holding the 2 hip bones together. |
| How many sacral vertebrae are there? | 5 (they are fused together so it appears as one large structure) |
| What are the names of the sacral vertebrae? | S1-S5 |
| Where are the coccygeal vertebrae? | in the tailbone |
| How many coccygeal vertebrae are there? | 3-5 (can differ from individual to individual) |
| How are the coccygeal vertebrae named? | Co1-Co5 |
| What is the name of the tailbone? | coccyx |
| What is meant by lordotic? | this is convex curvature of the spine found in the cervical and lumbar regions |
| What is meant by kyphotic? | this is a concave curvature of the spine found in the thoracic and sacral regions. |
| Why are the normal spinal curvatures important? | They increase the strength and stability of the spine. |
| What is scoliosis? | excessive kyphotic curvature of the thoracic spine. |
| What is kyphosis? | excessive lordotic curvature of the lumbar spine. (hump) |
| What is lordosis? | abnormal curvature of the lumbar spine in an anterior direction. |
| What is an intervertebral disc? | fibrocartilaginous pads that seperate and cushion the vertebrae in the spinal column. |
| What is a coccyx? | 4 vertebrae fused together at the posterior end of the sacrum. (tailbone) |
