Homeostasis
AP CHP 1
| Homeostasis Meaning | The existence of a stable internal environment despite unpredictable surroundings |
| Homeostasis word breakdown | Homeo - similar to Stasis - state of standing |
| Homeostatic Regulation | Autoregulation and Extrinsic regulation |
| Autoregulation | At cell and tissue level (fix the house) |
| Extrinsic Regulation | By nervous and endocrine systems (fix the city) |
| Receptor | Receives stimulus or detects change in the environment Ex: house detects temp is 65 degrees |
| Control Center | Process the receptors information, then decides based on set point Ex: house needs to be set at 70 degrees |
| Effector | Carries out instructions from control center to restore homeostasis Ex:HVAC turns on until set point of 70 is reached |
| Negative Feedback | Response reverses the original stimulus (restores to normal range) Ex:Thermoregulation |
| Thermoregulation | Self-regulation mechanism for mammals to maintain body temperature Ex: sweating to cool off the body |
| Positive Feedback | Amplifies the original change in conditions; moved away from homeostasis Ex: childbirth, clotting to stop bleeding |
| Equilibrium | Opposing forces are balanced; failure results in disease |
| Dynamic Equilibrium | Continual adaptation to changing conditions |
