Science Chapter 5

Rock layers, Tectonic plates, vocab, and more.

QuestionAnswer
What is the Geologic Column? A model of rock strata that documents the history of the earth.
What is radiometric Dating? Measuring the nuclear changes within the substances
What is Strata? Multiple rock layers
What are fossils? any remains or trace of a formerly living organism preserved by natural resources.
What is the principle of superposition? That layers are older if one the bottom and younger if on the top.
What is relative age Measuring the layers by the other layers around it
What is absolute age Measuring the relative amounts of certain elements found in the rock layers
What does absolute age rely on? It relies on radiometric dating
How does Earth’s layers tell us about Earth’s history? . It tells us that we have different views we believe in Noah's flood, but they believe in gradual change over millions of years.
What two ways geologists date rock strata Absolute age, and relative age.
what is an index fossil and how do we use that to date rocks? A fossil that regularly appears in certain layers of the geologic column. We use it to date rocks by figuring out which items are in which layers. and then dating those layers accordingly.
Study the tectonic plates map <img src=" alt="map of Earth in puzzle pieces"/>
What was Pangea? The last of a series of super - continents that were all connected to each other
What is the evidence toward their being a Pangea Continental drift
What is the difference between a glacier and an iceberg? Ice bergs are broken off pieces of ice when glaciers are thick sheet of ice
What are Ice core Samples? And how do they help us? They are cylinders of ice drilled out of glaciers. They help us age how old the earth is.
How old was the flood? About 4,000 years old
What do glaciers do to the land around them? sculpt mountains, carve valleys, and move vast quantities of rock and sediment.
What has the biggest effects of the glaciers? both land and ocean
About how long does a secular scientist say the amount of time it takes for a layer of ice to form? about 100 - 10,000 years old
What did the flood cause? the ice age
How many volcanic eruption happened during the ice age? And how do they know this?? 5 happened and they were all huge!!! they know this because of the ice core samples.
What is a nebular hypothesis? the idea that the solar system was created through a nebula
What do secular scientists believe about the continental drift That they drifted away from each other gradually over millions and millions of years
What is the order of life formation according to the secular geologic column? Precambrian, Phanerozoic, Haydean, archean, Proterzoic, paleozoic,
How long did the ice age last and have there been more than one? around 700 years
Is the old earth story a viable explanation of the origin of the earth? Why or why not? No because the animals were randomly and accurately separated through also that most fossils were still in the middle of moving and were buried rapidly.
How old is the earth and how do we know? The earth is about 6,000 years old and we know through biblical timing and the flood.
What is the order of events in creation? 1) light 2) the sky and the sea 3)dry land, plants 4) The sun, moon, stars, planets 5) beasts of the earth 6) Adam and Eve
Days of Noah’s Flood, What happened on Day: 7, 47,157 day 7 : God closes the door, the fountains of the deep burst forth and torrential rain. day 47: The rain stops and the mountains are covered by water day 157: God makes a wind to pass over the earth and the water begins to recede
days of Noah's flood, What happened day 316 and 371 day 316: Noah opens the Ark's roof, and he sees no more water day 371: Noah gets off the ark
How do Christians Interpret the Geologic Column? They interpret it as what happened during the flood
How do Christian think pangea separated? By the flood
What caused the ice age according to Christian Scientists? How long did it last? The flood, and the flood lasted 370 days.
Is the young earth story a viable option? Why or why not? Yes, and because it explains why the layers are the way they are and the tectonic drift.
What is a rift A crack or a split in the rock layers
Sea Floor Spreading Is when magma is moving in the cracks of the tectonic plates spreading the plates apart.
Mid ocean ridge it is a submerged mountains ( underwater mountain ranges )
Convergent movement Is the plates moving together
divergent moving is the plates move away from each other
subduction is plates moving underneath each other
transform is when the plates move parallel opposite directions (side by side)
eurasian, African, pacific, antarctic, and north american and south american and Australian plate. Figure it out and study the map
Who is Alfred Wegener ? Alfred Wegener is the one who came up with the theory of continental drift and was a German meteorologist
