Definitions
Question | Answer |

What are examples of physical abuse? | hitting, punching, biting, throwing things, grabbing, force feeding and shoving. |
What are examples of psychological abuse? | gaslighting, humiliation, rejecting a person, insults, name calling, and putting people down. |
What are examples of sexual abuse? | Rape, unwanted touching, indecent exposure and inappropriate comments. |
Denial | The suppression of information we find uncomfortable. A statement or action declaring something as untrue, refusal to admit the truth. |
Addiction | The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing or activity. Not having control over this compulsion even if it can be harmful. You can also be addicted to a relationship. |
Dignity | The state or quality of being worthy of honor, respect and esteemed. |
Power | Possession of control, authority or influence over others. |
Neglect | The state of being uncared for physically, emotionally and psychologically. |
Sexualized | When something or someone is made sexual or sexualized. |
Marginalized | A person, group or concept treated as insignificant or peripheral. (outside of mainstream society) |
List personality indicators of a abuser. | Mental illness, high stress, divorce, poverty, unemployment, illness, substance abuse, abusive past/childhood. |
List types of people who are at risk of being abused. | Being physically, emotionally and financially dependent, marginalized people, children, elderly people, isolated, reduced cognitive ability, disabled, substance abuse and caregivers. |
What is burnout? | A state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, can be caused by chronic stress. There can be a change in behavior, work, sleep habits, diet, self medicating and tempermant. |
Describe the Balance of Power | If balance of power is not respected /balanced behavior can become controlling. This controlling behavior by stronger person can lead to abusive behavior. |
Child abusive | Mistreatment or neglect of a child by parent, caregiver or guardian. |
Financial Abuse | Misuse of persons money or property. |
Physical abuse | Deliberate application of force to any part of a persons body which may result in non accidental injury and sometimes death, |
Emotional abuse | Words or actions that cause mental harm, especially to a persons self esteem. |
Failure to Thrive | Term to describe infants, babies and toddlers who are below norms for weight, growth or cognitive development. In older persons can be seen when their health declines for no apparent reason. |
Name three physical signs that a person is being abused. | Physical injuries, new injuries directly following old injuries and frequent injuries. |
Tension Building Phase | Tension builds between the victim and abuser. Abuser gets angrier, more aggressive, stressed. Victim tries to placate abuser and not anger them in any way. |
The Abusive Phase | Tension explodes in an abusive way. May be neglect, physical, emotional, sexual, or financial. Often this is triggered by event unrelated to victims behavior. |
The Honeymoon Phase | Abuser feels ashamed or sorry apologizes and promises they wont do it again. May offer gifts and attention. Both abuser and victim feel like they can change. |
