Skull Head
Epiphyseal Plate Cartilaginous layer between the epiphysis and the diaphysis of a long bone that grows, lengthening the plate.
Hemoglobin An iron-containing protein in red blood cells that reversibly binds oxygen.
Compact Bone Dense tissue in which cells are organized in osteons without apparent spaces.
Osteoclasts Bone destroying cells.
Hematopoiesis Blood cell formation.
Skeletal System All of the bones in the human body.
Medullary Cavity containing red and yellow marrow within the diaphysis of a long bone.
Diaphysis Shaft of a long bone
Periosteum Dense connective tissue covering the surface of a bone.
Endochondral Bones Bone that begins as hyaline cartilage that is subsequently replaced by bone.
Epiphysis End of a long bone.
Ossification Formation of bone tissue.
Spongy Bone Bone that consists of bars and plates separated by irregular spaces.
Levers A simple mechanical device consisting of a rod, fulcrum, weight, and a source of energy that is applied to some point on the rod.
Marrow Connective tissue in spaces in bones that includes blood forming stem and progenitor cells.
Osteoblasts Bone forming cell.
Osteocytes Mature bone cell.
Intramembranous Bones Broad, flat bones of the skull.
