Ch. 10 NS I Notes

Chapter 10 Nervous System I - Basic Structure & Function

QuestionAnswer
What is the nervous system made of? Composed primarily of neural tissue, but includes blood vessels and connective tissue
What are the two types of cells found in the nervous system? Neurons and neuroglia
What does a neuron do? Conduct impulses; Specialized to react to physical and chemical changes; Receive information through dendrites; Long cellular process carries information away from the cell
What are nerves? A bundle of axons
What is a synapse? Space between one neuron's axon and another's dendrite
What are neurotransmitters? Biological messengers
What is the central nervous system (CNS) composed of? Brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS) composed of? Cranial and spinal nerves; subdivided into the somatic nervous system (voluntary) and the autonomic nervous system (involuntary)
What are the three general functions of the nervous system? Sensory, integrative, and motor
Where are sensory receptors found? At the ends of sensory neurons
What do sensory receptors do? Gather information about changes inside and outside of the body; convert this information into nerve impulses
Where are nerve impulses transmitted from? Sensory neurons
What are neurofibrils? Network of fine threads extending into the axon to support it
What is a chromatophilic substance? Scattered throughout cytoplasm, is mainly rough ER
What are dendrites? Usually highly branched, carry information to the cell; can contact a sensory receptor or other neurons
What are axons?

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
